Here's another thing I found to speed up the opening and minimizing of FF. D, have you got the remove it plugin? brilliant!....You know when you go to some web site and you're trying to read something, and there is either some big advert that is blocking something. You can right click on anything on the page that is coded and click "remove this object" and presto it's nuked.

Q: [FireFox] Speed Up FireFox Load Time (#11768)
A:
Here's a few tweaks that will speed up the loading of FireFox either from being minimized or from a first start up. I tried them and they made a significant difference in the time it takes to load FireFox.
* Tweak 1
Step 1.Typing "about:config" (without quotes) into the Address Bar to create a new, Boolean value, Right-click any row, then click and select New>Boolean. Type or paste the following string into the dialog box that appears:
config.trim_on_minimize
Step 2. Click OK to close the dialog box. Change the value from "true" to "false" and restart Firefox.
* Tweak 2
Speeding up Firefox on Windows XP
You can do this by right-click the Start Menu item for Firefox, or any icon (shortcut) you use to start Firefox, and open the Properties dialog box. Add a space plus /Prefetch:1 to the command line and click OK. The resulting line might look as follows depending on where you installed FireFox:
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" /Prefetch:1

Microsoft now have a beta anti-spyware prog
available from their main site.
Ad-Aware is also really good, and free.
I installed and ran them both this evening...
My computer was littered with all kinds of
fucking junk - included one 'hijack attempt'
at some point in history, which was a bit
worrying. Microsoft's spotted things that
A-A didn't and vice versa.
It's using IE and having 'iSearch' appear
as a toolbar is something to really watch
out for. You can't uninstall it, and you
can't really kill it unless you go dabbling
with the registry.

Yeah i had that Microsoft Antispy a while back. Not bad.
Ad Aware i also have. I run that thing daily and all i have had were 3 objects so far that have been quarantined. They were the first things found when i installed, updated and ran it. Been okay since.... fingers crossed it stays that way lol!

the problem with Microsoft's Antispy is that it picks up valid apps that i run at home to remotely hit my other computers, such as VNC, and labels them as spyware. not that it's really a problem persay but it's quite annoying.
this site has some handy applications
http://www.sysinternals.com/
with Autoruns v6.1, Process Explorer v8.61 and a little common knowledge, you can manually detect and remove any spyware out there.
they also have some handy apps for those with home networks.
